Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18, 2000) was an American actress and performer who toured for more than 40 years. A torch singer noted for her smooth, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, she recorded "Cry me a river" the track she introduced to her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her role in Emergency The Adventures of Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her career as an actress. London's 35 year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It included parts as the female lead role in various westerns. In the mid-1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. Her final studio album in 1969, however, she continued to be a hit in the female lead role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she was a co-star with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
